A.D.A.M Comprehensive for Windows

1) Why am I receiving the message "This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down," when starting A.D.A.M. Comprehensive?

The most likely cause of this error message is that your display may be set to run in more than 256 colors. Comprehensive must be run in exactly 256 colors. To change your color setting, go to Start - Settings - Control Panel - Display - Settings and choose 256 from the list of Color Palettes. Click OK and then click YES to restart Windows when it asks you if you want to do so. Once Windows opens again the program should run without further error messages.
If you have confirmed that your display driver is set for 256 colors and you continue to receive the error message, your video driver may need to be updated. To do this, download the newest drivers for your video card from the manufacturer's web site or contact your manufacturer by phone.
If you are using Windows 3.x, you must change the number of colors by changing the video driver from the Windows Setup icon in the Main program group. Please see your computer's documentation or contact your computer manufacture for more details.

2) Why am I receiving the error message,"Cannot verify presence of the Hardware Key"?

The error message,"Cannot verify presence of hardware key" occurs when the security key is not connected to the computer on which A.D.A.M. Comprehensive is being run. The hardware key must be connected to the parallel printer port on the on the back of the computer while A.D.A.M. Comprehensive is in use. If the key is attached and you continue to have problems, please attempt these basic troubleshooting steps.

  1. Turn off the computer and remove the key.

  2. Check the key for any defects then place the key back on the parallel port. Do not reconnect any other parallel port device such as a printer.

  3. Reboot the computer.

  4. When Windows has finished loading, attempt to launch A.D.A.M. Comprehensive again.

  5. If you do not receive the hardware key error, turn off the computer again, reconnect any parallel device, reboot the computer, and attempt to launch A.D.A.M. Comprehensive again.

If the hardware key is attached and you continue to get the error message, please confirm that the parallel port on your computer is bidirectional. The hardware key must be attached to a bidirectional parallel port to function properly. To determine if your port is bidirectional, consult the documentation included with your computer or contact the manufacturer of your computer.
If after attempting these troubleshooting steps you are still receiving the "Cannot verify presence of hardware key" message, please contact A.D.A.M. Technical Support.

3) Can I run A.D.A.M. Comprehensive on a network?

A.D.A.M. Comprehensive was not designed to be run over a network. However, several networking options exist, depending on the version of the product.

If you have the keyed version of Comprehensive 2.3, you can install the majority of the program on a server and run it from any workstation that has a hardware key attached. An Express Installation is necessary on each of the workstations, and the shared files on the server must be set to Read Only.

If you have Comprehensive 2.3L, which is locked to the CD and does not require a hardware key, you will have to use a product called CD-Quickshare to network the product. CD-Quickshare is made by STAC, and allows our programs that are locked to the CD to be networked. CD-Quickshare also has some disk compression features that improve performance of the program when run on a network. Please see STAC's web site at http://www.mediapathtech.com for a downloadable demo of CD-Quickshare, and then speak with one of our salespeople if you feel it would provide a solution for you.

Please note that Comprehensive is not designed to run as an actual client/server based network product. Each workstation must be equipped with the actual application files (10Mb), while the server serves only as a source of storage for shared image files (450Mb). The benefits of this configuration include:

  • allowing workstations without CD-ROM drives to use the program

  • performance benefits created by running the program from a hard drive instead of from the CD

  • ability to run the program from workstations without needing the CD

4) What are the differences between the institutional and student versions of A.D.A.M. Comprehensive?

A.D.A.M. Comprehensive is the medical school/graduate level, fully interactive anatomy software for reference and teaching within schools or professional practices. It is accompanied by another program, A.D.A.M. Studio, an authoring tool designed to allow users to create customized presentations. Studio must be used for printing and exporting A.D.A.M. images.
A.D.A.M. Comprehensive Student Edition is a derivative designed for use solely as a medical school/graduate level student study program. The Student Edition has the same interactive access to anatomical information as its parent, but contains none of the presentation capabilities nor capability of linking to other programs. It is registered to an individual student owner/user and does not qualify for upgrade cost discounts.
