A.D.A.M Essentials for Windows

1) Why am I having problems with no sound or intermittent sound?

Sound working improperly may be due to a conflict with MacroMedia' s Director, the vehicle through which A.D.A.M. Essentials animations play, and other bitmap applications running simultaneously. A.D.A.M. Software is currently working with MacroMedia to resolve this issue. Until it is resolved, however, you must be careful not to run other bitmap applications while running A.D.A.M. Essentials.
The most popular bitmap application is desktop wallpaper. In order to hear pronunciations or animation dialogues, it is necessary for you to turn off your wallpaper pattern. To do this:

  1. Open the Main program group in your Program Manager.

  2. Open Control Panels and then open Desktop.

  3. Locate the section entitled Wallpaper, change the pattern to equal none and then click OK.

  4. Restart Windows.

  5. Once Windows restarts, launch A.D.A.M. Essentials and test for sound.

If changing the wallpaper pattern does not work, please check that there are no other applications running before launching A.D.A.M. Essentials. If you continue to have problems and you own an Ensoniq sound card or have a Voyetra sound driver installed, you will need to update your driver.

2) Why am I receiving the error message, "This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down.?"

This error can be caused by a variety of things. Make sure to click the Details button on the error message to find out more about the problems you are experiencing. In our experience, the most common reasons are related to display or video card drivers, or to the sound drivers installed in your system.

If you are receiving the error message, "AdamED11 caused a General Protection Fault in A.D.A.M.play.exe", you are most likely experiencing a problem with a display driver. You may need to contact the manufacturer of your video card to see about updating your video driver.

If you are receiving an error message stating that a General Protection Fault occurred in the file tapipkb3.drv or aapipkb4.drv, you are experiencing problems with the sound drivers installed on your computer. You will need to contact the manufacturer of your computer or sound card to obtain updated drivers.
